Yesterday I asked this question on Twitter:
“If you could only play one video game franchise for the rest of your life, with a steady supply of sequels, which franchise would you want?”
The most common response I got was Final Fantasy, but I also got Zelda, Starcraft, Fallout, Gran Turismo, and others.
I would want a franchise that included a variety of gameplay styles and allowed for single-player, cooperative multiplayer, and competitive multiplayer.
Starcraft was my knee-jerk reaction, because I think it’s the best game ever made (unless you include Tetris), but if all of the eventual sequels were just RTS games, I’d probably get worn out on those fairly quickly. If games like Starcraft: Ghost or a Starcraft MMO were included then I’d be much more inclined to choose Starcraft. I love the universe, but I’d need some shooting and/or RPG time in there to supplement the RTS time.
Halo is another option. It has the singleplayer/multiplayer balance down really well, and there’s even an RTS game in there, though I’m not particularly interested in console RTSes.
I could go for Diablo, as well, if they branched the franchise out into other gameplay styles. I think you could make a pretty solid Diablo RTS or FPS. I prefer the Starcraft universe to the Diablo universe, though.
I wouldn’t choose Zelda, because there isn’t a real multiplayer component available. I’ve really enjoyed the Zelda games I’ve played, but the replay value isn’t there, for me.
Half-Life could work. In fact, I prefer Half-Life to Halo, except that it has no split-screen multiplayer and I suck at FPSes online.
I think my final answer would have to be Tetris. I know it’s not really a franchise, per se, but… Tetris.

I’d choose Half-Life, simply because of the depth of the universe. Yeah, it’s all FPS at this point, but it does include HL, HL:Blu, HL:OPFor, HL2, HL2:E1, HL2:E2, and Codename:Gordon. I’m not even going to consider all of the mods; just the single universe. If there was more to the StarCraft universe, I’d call that one, though.
Half-Life for me, too. I’d be bummed about not getting TF2 or L4D, but let’s not forget that Portal is set in the Half-Life universe. If only Valve would get a move on with Episode 3…
This would be really hard for me as there is no franchise I like which combines both turned based strategy and first person shooters, my two favorite game types.
I would go with Half Life only if Team Fortress was included.
I’m going to go with StarCraft, there’s just so much untapped depth there. I guess things like Pentris are ’sequals’ to Tetris, but I’ve not found an alternative that didn’t suck. I’d love a Tetris RPG like whatever the bejewled one was called.
I’d find it really hard to live without any Fallout *or* Half-Life games, so I’m in a bit of a quandary.
On the basis that I only recently bought the Fallout Collection and haven’t yet played FO3, I think I have to go with Fallout, because it gives me more replay value until the next one comes out.
If WoW had been included, I would’ve picked that it, but I guess Diablo would suffice.
I included “Warcraft”, which would encompass WoW along with Warcraft 1, 2, and 3.
