Yesterday I asked this question on Twitter:

“If you could only play one video game franchise for the rest of your life, with a steady supply of sequels, which franchise would you want?”

The most common response I got was Final Fantasy, but I also got Zelda, Starcraft, Fallout, Gran Turismo, and others.

Pick one game franchise to play for the rest of your life.

I would want a franchise that included a variety of gameplay styles and allowed for single-player, cooperative multiplayer, and competitive multiplayer.

Starcraft was my knee-jerk reaction, because I think it’s the best game ever made (unless you include Tetris), but if all of the eventual sequels were just RTS games, I’d probably get worn out on those fairly quickly. If games like Starcraft: Ghost or a Starcraft MMO were included then I’d be much more inclined to choose Starcraft. I love the universe, but I’d need some shooting and/or RPG time in there to supplement the RTS time.

Halo is another option. It has the singleplayer/multiplayer balance down really well, and there’s even an RTS game in there, though I’m not particularly interested in console RTSes.

I could go for Diablo, as well, if they branched the franchise out into other gameplay styles. I think you could make a pretty solid Diablo RTS or FPS. I prefer the Starcraft universe to the Diablo universe, though.

I wouldn’t choose Zelda, because there isn’t a real multiplayer component available. I’ve really enjoyed the Zelda games I’ve played, but the replay value isn’t there, for me.

Half-Life could work. In fact, I prefer Half-Life to Halo, except that it has no split-screen multiplayer and I suck at FPSes online.

I think my final answer would have to be Tetris. I know it’s not really a franchise, per se, but… Tetris.
